Excise Tax Compliance Associate Supervisor

BASIC PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Excise Tax Compliance Supervisor by serving as primary point of contact for the Excise Tax Compliance Analyst. Ensure that all motor fuel excise tax returns are being analyzed and reconciled to the general ledger and proper payment amounts are being remitted to the proper taxing authority timely and accurately.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Train and guide Excise Tax Compliance Analysts and Senior Excise Tax Compliance Analysts.
  • Ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures related to indirect taxes.
  • Ensure compliance by communicating with taxing authorities.
  • Ensures compliance to established business models by reviewing data in Right Angle and SAP
  • Assists the Excise Tax Compliance Supervisor in outlining and monitoring work assignments to 1. Distribute work evenly among group 2. Ensure timely filing of returns and notices 3. Maintain quality standards to achieve in compliance.
  • Ensures compliance and accuracy of filing by reviewing return payment and filing confirmations and general ledger reconciliations are within department approval thresholds.
  • Reviews payment, filing, reconciliations of return payments greater than or equal to $1 million
  • Works with Indirect Tax Research Team, Indirect Tax Audit Team and other departments to ensure compliance in filings, amendments, notices and refund requests.
  • Knowledgeable in audit and notice work demonstrated by relaying closed audit summary results back to the team and making needed changes.
  • Assists Excise Tax Supervisor and Senior Supervisor in working with other departments within the company to resolve any tax reporting issues.
  • Conducts monthly one on ones with team analysts
  • Identify areas for improvements and recommend solutions
  • Supervisory duties include Excise Tax Compliance Analysts performance, goal setting, evaluations and development.
  • Assist Excise Tax Compliance Supervisor with special projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
     
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Education:
      • High School degree or equivalent required.
      • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting preferred.
      • MBA or CPA a plus
  • Experience:
      • 3+ years transactional multi-state motor fuel excise tax and high-level accounting experience strongly preferred.
      • Prior involvement in complex reconciliation of multi-record data and system implementation/administration preferred.
         
        SKILLS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Skills:
    • Hard Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office, Avalara, Right Angle, SAP, AKORE
    • Soft Skills: Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate with leadership, keen attention to detail; ability to lead others
  • Typical Physical Demands:
        • Commonly requires 45-hour work weeks.
        • Possible evening/weekend work.
        • Requires prolonged sitting, some bending and stooping.
        • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
      • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
      • Requires normal range of hearing and vision.
