Director of Indirect Tax

BASIC PURPOSE: Oversight of Indirect Tax Department including planning, research, analysis, compliance, and audit defense for Love’s family of companies. Compliance includes timely completion and filing sales tax and motor fuel excise tax returns, quarterly estimated tax payments, annual reports and managing correspondence and audits with tax authorities.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversight of the indirect tax team and responsibility for the building and strengthening of relationships with other individuals and groups within the Company to ensure the Indirect Tax Department is effectively serving our business partners.
  • Work effectively with the group and local finance teams, payroll, HR, the legal department and others in the organization to evaluate the tax impact of commercial transactions, including M&A work, and considering ways of mitigating tax exposures.
  • Oversee indirect taxes including motor fuel excise, sales/use tax, occupancy tax and VAT, including the compliance process, provision/accounting, and any associated audit process, including negotiations of audit settlements.
  • Experience researching international motor fuel tax transactions – primarily in Mexico and Canada.
  • Manage the review of tax process control documentation, tax policies and procedures, and disclosure controls to ensure they are effective, maintained, and updated in accordance with all legal requirements, and company standards.
  • Oversee the process for evaluating and pursuing various sales and motor fuel tax incentives and credits at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Directs the preparation of work papers and tax returns to ensure they reconcile to the general ledger.
  • Direct the management of federal, state and local motor fuel and sales tax audit process, including the management of the relationships with the external tax authorities and the evaluation of any proposed assessments.
  • Provide tax guidance, advice and risk management support to the company, its business units and family.
  • Identify planning opportunities as well as potential audit issues.
  • Provide guidance to other departments as needs / opportunities arise including compliance and changing tax law. 
  • Manage the review of tax software used in research, planning and compliance to assure products most suited to the tax needs are in use and fully utilized.
  • Complete continuing education in tax with emphasis in related industry and company business strategies.  
  • Work effectively with internal and external advisors and business units to devise, review and implement transaction related tax structures and monitor existing tax structures and risks.
  • Flexibility and focus to manage continuous interruptions and changing needs by various individuals.
  • Represent the indirect tax department on various task forces and committees.
  • Pursue opportunities to automate tax processes.
  • Develop, mentor and guide members of the Indirect Tax Department including advocating and supporting continuing education in various forms for team members.
  • Other duties assigned as needed.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Education:
      • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Taxation required
      • CPA, CMI, JD or Master’s in Taxation preferred
  • Experience:
      • Minimum of 10-15 years of indirect tax experience

    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, strong oral and written communication skills, ability to design and implement complex solutions, ability to prioritize and meet time sensitive deadlines, team player
  • Typical Physical Demands:
        • Requires prolonged sitting, some bending and stooping
        • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
        • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
        • Requires normal range of hearing and vision.
