BASIC PURPOSE: It is the mission of the safety department to empower great managers who care with the resources and education needed to eliminate or mitigate workplace hazards while providing safe locations and experiences for our customers. Regional, multi-state travel is required for the safety specialist position. This is a regional position that will involve traveling to locations in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, etc.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Integrate a variety of occupational health and safety programs to assure the highest possible degree of safety for all Love’s employees.
- Identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices in the workplace.
- Survey to identify and evaluate occupational health and safety conditions.
- Conduct and coordinate on-site inspections to audit physical conditions and safe work practices.
- Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the hazard control system, policies, and procedures and implement changes that reflect improved opportunities to eliminate work place accidents and injuries.
- Conduct specialized safety and health training programs to communicate hazard control information.
- Foster a safety-centric culture within the Love’s Family of Companies.
- Analyze data; prepare actionable recommendations to eliminate or minimize potential hazards.
- Incorporate essential occupational health and safety requirements into existing processes and procedures.
- Other duties assigned as needed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Education:
- High school Diploma or equivalent required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene or a related field preferred
- Experience:
- 1-3 years of related safety experience or safety training is preferred
SKILLS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Skills:
- Hard Skills: Knowledge of Microsoft Office, training or knowledge of occupational health and safety compliance with applicable federal and state regulations/standards, ability to hands on train on health and safety, requires experience in implementation of health and safety programs, policies, procedures and processes as well as working knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements (OSHA, DOT, FRA, PHMSA, and EPA), and the ability to use the Internet.
- Soft Skills: Excellent oral and verbal communication skills and organizational skills; the ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, government regulations, professional journals; the ability to write technical reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions, the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardizations exists; ability to work independently and to meet deadlines; and keen attention to detail.
- Typical Physical Demands:
- Requires prolonged sitting, some bending and stooping.
- Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
- Requires normal range of hearing and vision.
- Valid driver's license is required.
- Travel is required (travel frequency varies but will typically range from 1-2 weeks of overnight travel per month). A company vehicle is provided.
