Cloud Systems Engineer

Basic Purpose: The Cloud Systems Engineer will design, plan, manage, maintain, and/or coordinate the operations of cloud-based solutions on-prem and via third-party providers. The candidate must have excellent communication skills and experience with general datacenter processes, metrics, and documentation. An advanced understanding of infrastructure hardware, Windows and Linux operating systems, virtualization on VMware platforms, and public cloud methodology is required. 

 

Major Responsibilities:
•    Research technology, processes, and strategies that would improve performance and/or cost-effectiveness of existing cloud systems or be applied to new or refreshed systems.
•    Working with management and in-house or third-party teams, provide metrics to track system costs and assist with the projection of future costs and budgeting.
•    Research, design, implement, and maintain enterprise solutions including storage, compute, virtualization, and orchestration and automation platforms.
•    Familiarity with critical IT concepts and processes, such as configuration management, high availability, networking, disaster recovery, and security.
•    Monitor key areas such as system capacity, availability, and organic growth, providing metrics to assist in planning, provisioning, optimization, and budgeting.
•    Performs analysis and makes recommendations regarding systems-related hardware, software, and cloud-based services.
•    Create and maintain custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on tasks.
•    Proactively maintain and patch systems as required by security, vendor, or internal infrastructure best practices.
•    Monitor cloud-based systems and operations, assuring proper levels of service and cost, providing assistance as needed.
•    Participates in and provides input to projects related to business units and overall IT infrastructure.
•    Advanced troubleshooting of platforms and services as needed and requested, after-hours at times.

 

Education and Experience
•    Education:

  • HS Diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred
  • VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP) or equivalent certification preferred.

•    Experience:

  • 7+ years in enterprise systems administration.
  • 5+ years designing and implementing virtual systems
  • 5+ years working with enterprise compute and storage systems, both physical and virtual
  • 3+ years working with automation/scripting languages —e.g. Python, PowerShell, JavaScript
  • 3+ years working with cloud platforms —e.g. Office 365, AWS, Azure

 

Skills and Physical Demands:

Hard Skills:
•    Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, or other public cloud experience
•    Knowledge and experience with configuration management platforms —e.g. Puppet, Ansible
•    Microsoft PowerShell, Python, JavaScript, or other scripting/coding language proficiency
•    Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server, RedHat Enterprise Linux (or equivalent)
•    Knowledge and experience with VMWare vSphere ESXi 6.0+
